May Kicks Off Safety Awareness All Season Long
Inaugural Public Safety Campaign
By Lisa Hallett Taylor, About.com Guide

What used to be Pool Safety Week has now become National Water Safety Month. Starting in May 2009, the public awareness campaign spearheaded by The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, the World Waterpark Association and the National Recreation & Park Association is dedicating the month to educating the public about safe aquatic environments. These include residential and public swimming pools and spas, waterparks, hotels and resorts, and water recreation facilities.

The safety campaign will focus on layers of protection, anti-entrapment drain covers, and undistracted adult supervision.

Swimming is an activity engaged in by people of all ages. It offers many health and fitness benefits, cools you off in the summer, and provides an opportunity to socialize with family and friends. As with any form of exercise, it's imperative that safety rules be followed so that it is always a pleasurable and fun experience.

National Water Safety Month, May 2010, is a joint effort of the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP), the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF), the Independent Pool & Spa Service Association (IPSSA), the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and the World Waterpark Association (WWA).

During May, there will be many activities and events in local communities to remind people of all ages to become water aware by following simple safety tips that will help to avoid unintentional injury while swimming.

Above all, NOTHING TAKES THE PLACE OF ADULT SUPERVISION, WITHOUT DISTRACTIONS!

Be water aware! Enjoy all the positive effects available through safe swimming.
